I use Zyrtec with success in one of my dogs. He in 9 and has severe allergy problems. I use Zyrtec only seasonally, when the allergies are at their worst, and control the rest of the time with omega fatty acids and an anti-depressant. I saw a brief mention of it's use in a dog magazine. I have not found studies of it's safe(or unsafe)use in dogs, but upon consulting with my Vet decided to try it. With the Zyrtec, he no longer spends his days trying to eat off his paws. Before you try any human OTC or RX cure, always consult your Vet and exhaust all of their possible remedies.

Consider food allergies.  There are some over the counter foods for dogs with allergies like duck and potato or venison and rice.  Your vet will also be able to get you one.  I know my dog is allergic to corn and chicken.  Most dog foods have ingredients that are not listed.  These are two of the most common.  I have made my dog a mix of brown rice, sweet potato and kale.  She loves it.  I also give her raw brocolli and raw carrots for treats.

I am using Zyrtek for my dog.  She is a 4 year old boxer that has flare ups in the spring and summer.  It works great!  I give her a half of a 10mg pill once a day.
