I've worn figure skates (just recreationally)for many years.  I needed a new pair of skates and decided that I wanted to learn to skate without picks (my kids all play hockey).  I was talked into buying figure skates and simply removing the picks by the sales person.  Have I made a mistake?  Will having a figure skate blade with no picks as opposed to a narrower, rockered blade make even some basic skating (i.e. cross overs) more difficult?
