Since yours is a five month old question the problem must be repaired by now.

Sue, since this is an old question your problem likely is no longer at issue, but this may help other young ladies.

Any vehicle whose engine RPM speed jumps up all of the sudden and unexpectedly while driving on the road may be caused by the car popping out of gear.

If the vehicle has a standard shift the clutch is probably defective. If it is an automatic, the transaxial(transmission) would appear to be slipping. This clearly is an issue requiring immediate professional help though.

I have a 93 Achieva that does not rev when in drive or reverse, but when I'm in park it revs and clicks, sometimes to the point where it automatically shuts off. The arrow on my RPM bounces up to 3 then down to 1 and sometimes way below. However, it does not rev when I'm driving. Is this a transmission problem as well?
