I took my puppy to the groomers the first week I had him. He was 10 wks old. I only had his nose and paws trimmed. He didn't need a hair cut until he was 16 wks old. I didn't have any problems. I wanted him to get use to going to the groomers.

My 4month puppy had a really bad experience recently. The groomers did too much grooming on him. He was so stressed and had signs of an allergic reaction when i picked him up. He ended up in the Emergency room. Apparently they held him with such force as to cause pulminary adema. His lungs had contusions and fluid in them. Please, Please, make sure his first experiences are gentle. Ease him into the grooming process. My puppy's first experience was gentle. The second one was at a different establishment and it was just too much grooming too soon!

I hope you and your puppy have had a pleasant grooming experience, as I see your question was posted a few months ago. I still would like to encourage you, and anyone else reading these responses, to have your puppy groomed often and by a reputable groomer. Try to find a groomer that will groom by individual appointment so that your puppy does not have to spend the entire day in a crate, that can be very stressful on a dog at any age. Also, frequent grooming at home can make the professional grooming experience more tolerable. Good luck and best wishes with your new addition.

I got our little girl in February at 10 weeks old and it was about april before we did her first grooming job.  Then in mid april we did Abby really short as we have a swimming pool which she loves going in.  I let her hair go quite a bit longer in the winter months and do daily grooming.  If you don't want to get her cut, please please make sure that the hair in your little one's ear are plucked.  Use the special powder for dogs ears before you pluck as it does hurt them if you don't.  Have fun with your little one.  They are the friendliest, loving, smart pet to have.  Good luck Christine.

You should not let your dog swim in the pool!!! Dogs have different pH levels in their skin and eyes than humans, and there is also a great risk in drowning when your not around. A middle-aged couple used to let their beloved dog swim in the pool. He got so used to just jumping in, he jumped in one day while the solar cover was still on, and drowned because the couple could not save him in time. My dog loves to run through the sprinkler in the summer...and that's a great way to spend some quality time with her when I'm feeling the heat too. For grooming...do it as early and as often as possible or your dog will give you a lot of hassle. Trust me!

Also...pool chemicals are not nice for animals either...especially sanitizers and oxidizers. Believe me, I know pool chemicals really well. I used to sell them, along with pools.

If your dog likes going in the water, think about buying a kiddie pool.  You can keep the water level low enough to prevent accidental drowning, you don't need to use chemicals, and you can dump out the water after each use, so there's no risk of the dog using his/her "pool" when you're not around to supervise.

I believe 4 months is too young for going to the groomer.  I would wait until 6 months before taking the pup to a groomer.  I only take my dogs to a groomer who specializes in grooming shih tzus.  Learn how to brush and maintain your pup/dog- you will develope a very close bond with your dog.

Be very picky about the groomer because one bad experience can really make grooming a hassle.  And shih tzus have to be groomed.

Many of you state to cut the Shih Tzu'shair often, but how often is that? We have a six month old little girl Shih Tzu and my husband wants to trim her at home weekly. Her hair is not as silky as it used to be and I'm wondering if it is because of the frequent cuttings?

I think your puppy first groom should be at 10wks to get them use to the routine, but the first groom should be simple trimming of the feet, face and ear pluck, nail trim thats not stressful and also do force your puppy into being groom, take it one step at a time they will eventually get the hang of it.

I need instructions on how i can keep my shih tzu puppy's eyes clean.  I clean around his eyes every day but it doesn't seem to help and now it started to smell.  I was told it was normal, but him being our first puppy, it just doesn't smell normal to me.  I'll do what ever it takes to keep him healthy and happy.

My pup had his first visit to the grooming salon when he was 4 months old. The groomer was really patient in him as he tried to bit him once in a while. He looked really good in his new 'do and i was so satisfied with the result that I am already planning of going back probably next month (he'll be 6 months by  then! ;) )

He insists on being wrapped up in flanel blankets, if hes not he cries! He's peed on the bed, which he never does! Should I be concerned?
