Hi! You can't know for sure unless a male is around to try her. There are two stages in heat and one of them is going into heat which can range from 1-17 days so you could have missed it and it could be coming. Also if you have a male with her at all times and she won't breed the entire time she's in heat she's probably having "split heat" and she'll go into heat again 2-6 weeks after the first heat. The suggestion by professionals is to put a male with the female every other day to find out. Hope this helps. Tanisha

My almost 2 year old lab is in heat and I have a male with her rite now, but I was wondering when I should try to breed her. She started to bleed on Thursday (1/27/05) and she hasn't let the male latch on yet, but he tried and it got on her face, any suggestions on getting them to breed or when would be greatly appreciated.

Ashley

My 9 month old yellow lab is swollen and acting very agressive, very unlike her I.E.  (chewed up her bedding, tore the vinyl floor to shreds and bites her crate viciously) Could she be going into her first heat cycle? And if so, is it a good idea to try and breed her on thi first cycle or wait until the second time around?

Why are you even considering breeding when there's so many dogs already in rescue, and thousands are being put to sleep every day because they are not wanted??!

I know I am answering nearly 2 years after the fact, but if you have to ask that question:  "What day/days of the heat cycle is best for breeding..."  No offense, but YOU HAVE NO BUSINESS BREEDING YOUR DOG.  This should be left to the expert/experienced breers - go visit your local shelter and look at all the homeless dogs/puppies there - then ask me why I say this.
