No. Any breed can have a black pigment on his tongue, for example the lab part of him could be responsible for the black spots on his tongue: http://www.woodhavenlabs.com/tonguespots.html

I agree with Val.  My Golden had tiny black spots when he was a puppy and they have gotten larger as he gets older.  I looked into it way back because someone told me the "Chow Theory" and found it was all a load of crock.  I have a Yellow Lab too (AKC) and her tongue is all pink.

Your dog is not a black retriever, it is a flat coat retriever.  Beautiful dog.

I also have a black/Golden Retriever mix (Buddy Boy) and he has a spotted tongue too...looks as though he spilt black ink on it.  He is not "part chow"---HaHa.  He looks exactly like the Golden Retriever breed, but solid black and has a striking feature...and that is his BEAUTIFUL SPOTTED TONGUE!!! I bet your dog is outstanding with his spotted tongue!! Maybe the spots occur when they are cross-bred. I hope my reply helps some, Jules

My Black lab/golden retriever has a black spot on his tongue....it's not due to him having Chow Blood....it's a birth mark...just as if you were to have a birth mark.  I wouldn't worry

I think it is because it has a mixed breed in it so it gets half of one dog and half of a another so that is what I think

I have a purebred Golden Retriever who has black spots on her tongue. There isn't an ounce of Chow in her going back to the beginning of time!  It's pigmentation and does not mean your dog has Chow in him.
