The female will breed only when she is between 3-21 days into her heat.(it varys alot from dog to dog!) Signs of heat are swelling of the vulva and vaginal discharge. She will be pregnant for 58-66 days from mating. The signs of pregnancy are: getting a large hard tummy around 5-7 weeks along, digging, getting lazier, laying around more, eating more or losing interest in food for periods of time, and around the last few days milk starts dripping. She needs to continue exercise though weight loss in not advisable. She also needs to eat puppy food throughout her pregnancy and nursing. You need to increase her feeding 25% every week from the 5th week until she is eating as much as she want in the last week. She may want small meals though. If a dog goes into heat and does not get pregnant she may still show all these signs because her body is tricked into thinking she is. These signs sometimes continue through whelping and she becomes desperate as she thinks she has pups but can't find them. If she gets restless, digs or tears things up as if making a nest,  isn't interested in the most tempting foods, and her rectal temperature goes down 2-3 degrees(like 101-98 for example) then she will have pups within the next 24 hours.
