A: The news:comp.archives.ms-windows.announce newsgroup was created the 19th of June 1996. The clarified charter is given below. Please bear in mind that the charter and the outline of this FAQ were created long before the existence Windows 98 and ME, and the more current versions 2000/XP/2003 and beyond. CHARTER: This moderated newsgroup is for the upload announcements and related information from Microsoft Windows archive sites (also called FTP sites) with Public Domain, Freeware and Shareware material. The subjects include the upload announcements via the Microsoft Windows FTP site moderators, the Microsoft Windows sites' periodical summaries, potential policy statements and downtime warnings, and the Microsoft Windows FTP site moderators' reports about the connectivity problems with their archive sites. Unix announcements conform only if they directly relate to transferring or handling the Microsoft Windows material from the Microsoft Windows FTP sites. 16-bit programs, 32-bit programs, programs for Windows 95/98/Me are all on-topic. The purpose of news:comp.archives.ms-windows.announce is to be a ONE-WAY channel for Microsoft Windows upload announcements which the moderators handle, and other one-way, occasional information relating to Microsoft Windows archive sites. The moderators will therefore not be handling users' discussion material, questions, and replies. The unmoderated news:comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss newsgroup (see below) will cover that aspect. Articles from all major FTP servers are welcome, just as in the existing news:comp.archives.msdos.announce. The newsgroup news:comp.archives.msdos.announce and the newsgroup news:comp.archives.msdos.d handle MS-DOS shareware, freeware and public domain programs. END CHARTER. MODERATOR INFO: comp.archives.ms-windows.announce Principal moderator: Keith Petersen (w8sdz@uploadcentral.com) Co-Moderator: Timo Salmi (ts@uwasa.fi) + FAQ maintenance Joined Moderators: David Kirschbaum (kirschd@Simtel.Net) Ari Hovila (Currently otherwise engaged) Administrative contact address: win-news-manager@uploadcentral.com Article submission address: win-news-request@uploadcentral.com END MODERATOR INFO. Official brief description: comp.archives.ms-windows.announce Announcements about Windows archives. (Moderated) 2. ***** Q: What is the purpose of comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss newsgroup? A: The news:comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss newsgroup was created the 19th of June 1996. The charter is given below. This unmoderated newsgroup is the discussion subgroup of the moderated news:comp.archives.ms-windows.announce newsgroup. The newsgroup covers users' reports, questions and discussions about the Public Domain and shareware programs at the Microsoft Windows archive sites (also called FTP sites), and the users' questions about the Microsoft Windows FTP sites such as the users' connectivity problem reports. The group is also for posting requests/replies concerning where to find such programs as are stored at the Microsoft Windows FTP sites. However, users are expected to refer to the FTP site file indexes before posting such requests. The newsgroup does not cover any discussions of fully commercial programs or programs for other operating systems like OS/2. (These programs have Usenet newsgroups of their own). Further clarification: a) As a discussion newsgroup this newsgroup will not allow binary/uuencoded postings. b) This newsgroup will not allow soliciting trading individual copies, fully commercial or otherwise, of Windows programs, cracks or serial numbers between the readers. Official one line description: comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss Discussing Microsoft Windows archives. 3. ****** Q: Can I continue to post Windows related questions to the old news:comp.archives.msdos.d newsgroup? A: No. The new comp.archives.ms-windows.{announce,discuss} have been created with the specific purpose of reallocating the news load. Therefore, we should try our best to direct Windows discussions to news:comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss only, and MS-DOS discussions to news:comp.archives.msdos.d only. In particular, please avoid crossposting your questions and comments. Choose one newsgroup only. The readership is bound to overlap, anyway. If you have a question related to the MS-DOS / Windows FTP sites in general, and can't decide which newsgroup to choose, please pose your question to news:comp.archives.msdos.d. 4. ***** Q: Where to ask about and discuss Windows programming? A: As you will have read in the charter the purpose of the newsgroup news:comp.archives.ms-windows.discuss is "Discussing Microsoft Windows FTP sites and the programs on them". Windows programming questions and debates should be avoided, unless directly related to finding related material on the FTP sites or problems in such material or problems in getting the material from the sites. Please let's use common sense in what is relevant, since it is not always an easy call. In any case, there are many useful newsgroups for Windows programmers including the ones listed below. Please first carefully check the newsgroup's assigned purpose before you post. A: The comp.archives.ms-windows.{announce,discuss} newsgroups have been modeled after their sister newsgroups for MS-DOS material news:comp.archives.msdos.announce and news:comp.archives.msdos.d. Therefore the readers are referred to the regularly posted FAQs of the sister newsgroups. Most of the information is directly applicable if you substitute in your mind MS-DOS for Windows. The comp.archives.msdos.{announce,d} Frequently Asked Questions is available as ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/pd2/camfaq.zip. See http://www.uwasa.fi/~ts/garbo.html#faq for a Garbo FAQ.
