One way to work around this is to disable the indicator (XmNindicatorOn False) and then install selected/unselected pixmaps containing both your graphic and your text (XmNselectPixmap and XmNselectPixmap). Also disable the button shadows (XmNshadowThickness 0) if you don't want those.
