SECTION A: FAQ about clothing for big folks in the Netherlands

A1) How do I convert between sizes?

Here are some conversions between general European, UK, and US sizes:

Women's dresses and suits
UK size is 2 more than US
European size is 30 more than US
        i.e., UK 28 = US 26 = Euro 56

Women's shoes
UK sizes are 1.5 less than US
        i.e., UK 8 = US 9.5

Men's suits and coats
UK sizes are the same as US
European sizes are 10 more than US/UK
        i.e., UK 56 = US 56 = Euro 66

Men's shirts
UK sizes are the same as US
        i.e., UK 20 = US 20

Men's socks
UK sizes are the same as US
        i.e., UK 10.5 = US 10.5

Men's shoes
UK sizes are 1 less than US
        i.e., UK 10.5 = US 11.5

For better guidelines, here are the measurements for women's sizes in
the Netherlands (all measurements in cm). If your figures differ,
please
pass them on to the FAQ maintainer.

Women's Sizes
Sizes 40 42 44 46 48 50 52 54 56 58

BUST 91 96 100 104 110 116 122 128 134 140
HIP 99 102 105 109 114 120 126 132 138 144
WAIST 75 78 81 85 90 96 102 108 114 120

These are the sizes for normal length women (1.64m). There is also
a set of sizes for short women (under 1.60m) and tall women (unknown).
These are derived from the normal length sizes by dividing by 2
(short)
or multiplying by 2 (tall). Thus a short woman, having the
measurements
of size 52 above would actually have size 26. Some catalogues
cater to short women, and there are sewing patterns for both
short and tall women available.

Bra sizes:
1) Measure around the body directly under the bust. Round the number
to the nearest multiple of 5. This is your bra size.
2) Measure around the fullest part of your bust.
The difference between 2) and your bra size is your cup size.

CUP SIZE AA A B C D DD E F FF G

This one is special. No sizes, just a section with big
clothes
for "big girls". The style is more "alternative", the
stock
consists of skirts and dresses and unisex shirts. The
owner
claims that Pavarotti bought a shirt last time he visited
Oslo!
And not too expensive. Note: I recently went into Piraten.
While I
liked the unique clothes, the nicest outfits were only
offered in
the smaller sizes (approx. size 12). Most of the clothing
offered
for larger sizes were nothing more than shapeless garments
and very
            unflattering.
