Decide how much of your favorite program (plus IRIX) needs to be resident for good performance and how much doesn't, and make sure you have enough memory for the former and enough memory plus swap for the latter. Put "rmem" and "swp" in your ~/.grosview file, run 'gr_osview' and run your favorite program to see what it needs.
